South African organiser Andre de Wet also spoke of his committment to bring the event to Cape Town, saying, ‘After meeting Dan last year and hearing about the Kitesurfing Armada initiative I knew we had to work together to bring this amazing event to Cape Town. It has been fantastic to launch the event this evening and have so many people here buying into the vision  and responding so positively to the plans.’

The packed rooftop terrace included representatives from a wide range of Cape Town companies wanting to find out more about the Kitesurfing Armada, as well as the members of kitesurfing industry and media. Professional kitesurfers Sam Medysky, Alex Neto, Luke McGillewie and Noe Font also attended the evening and are supporting the event.

Famous for its spectacular beauty, climate, culture and reliable wind conditions, Cape Town is a popular destination for a large number of kitesurfers and kitesurfing enthusiasts who flock there each season, during January & February each year. With other high profile events such as the Red Bull King of the Air taking place around the same time, the team hopes the Kitesurfing Armada will be another positive addition to the vibrant kitesurfing scene.

Catherine Lückhoff, CEO of HQ Africa:  It is such a privilege to be hosting the Kitesurfing Armada in Cape Town. We can’t think of a more spectacular backdrop for an event of this magnitude and look forward to breaking both the World Record and the amount of funds raised through the teams’ joint efforts. This is such a unique opportunity for the kite surfing community to do good while having fun and we really want to encourage everyone to join in.”

As always, The Kitesurfing Armada will also be focused on fundraising for charity – with the Kitesurfing Armada Trust distributing 100% of funds raised to a range of causes supporting disadvantaged young people and the rescue services, including supporting South African charities selected by the local organisers.

Mario Steinbuch, Managing Director of Founders Kite Club, spoke on the night saying: ‘The Armada has been a strong partner for us from the start. We are very happy to be part of this amazing event and will do everything in our powers to set a new World Record and get the amount of funds raised through the roof. Let’s do this!’

A group from the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada team visited the Hayling Island RNLI station yesterday to present them with a £5,000 cheque from funds raised at last years event.

Lifeboat Operations Manager Jonathan Bradbury received the cheque and said, ‘We want to say a sincere thank you to all the kitesurfers who participated in the Armada and raised this fantastic amount. We are currently aiming to kit out the entire crew here with new drysuits, specialist helmets and gloves and this will go a along way to achieving this goal, making us more effective on the water in rescue situations.’

Mr Bradbury also explained how the Hayling RNLI branch was effectively founded after a rescue which took place 150 years ago today, and also joked, ‘to be honest these days we actually have more trouble from windsurfers than kitesurfers…’

Dan Charlish from the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada said, ‘Knowing the RNLI are there gives me, and I’m sure many other kitesurfers, a lot of reassurance. They do an amazing job and it’s great that the kitesurfing community can come together once a year and support their work.’

Dan also thanked the volunteers for their fantastic commitment to the event, the sponsors and kitesurfing industry for getting behind the Armada and Havant Borough Council for their ongoing support and partnership.

Sarah Flamson of Havant Borough Council attended the presentation and said, ‘We are fully behind the goals of the Kitesurfing Armada and it brings so much to Hayling Island – we are looking forward to working with the team to make the event even better this year.’

The Kitesurfing Armada team are pleased to announce exciting plans for the first ever South African Kitesurfing Armada to be hosted in Cape Town in February 2016. Following the success of events in Hayling Island and Tarifa, the interest among countries to host the Kitesurfing Armada is high, and Cape Town will provide the perfect destination for the event.

In partnership with HQ Africa and the Founders Kite Club, the Kitesurfing Armada team plan to announce the event details in Cape Town in January 2015 allowing for sufficient time to prepare for an attempt to be made on the Guinness World Record the following season.

Dan Charlish, Director of the Kitesurfing Armada, said, ‘It will be an amazing experience to run a Kitesurfing Armada in Cape Town. The place is the epicentre of kiting at that time, and the chance to get hundreds of kitesurfers all riding together to get the Guinness World Record, with Table Mountain as a backdrop, is an amazing opportunity.  With the partners we have in Cape Town I’m sure we can deliver an awesome event.’

The Virgin Kitesurfing Armada Festival came to a successful end on Sunday evening after a fantastic weekend of Kitesurfing, SUP boarding, fundraising and record breaking. On Saturday, the Armada surpassed last year’s total participant numbers with 344 kitesurfers participating, which is so positive for the sport within the UK.  Then on Sunday a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title was set for the Largest parade of paddle boarders with 256 paddle boarders travelling down a similar course on CBK beach, Hayling Island. An official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS adjudicator was on hand to approve the record.

The Kitesurfing Armada was an event for all, attracting world champions, pro-kitesurfers, a double Olympic medallist and novice kitesurfers, with ages ranging from as young as 11 years through to 73 years.  The CBK beach was awash with spectators to support the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title attempt.

Director of the Kitesurfing Armada Dan Charlish said, ‘It has been a truly remarkable weekend, where once again we have been overwhelmed by the positivity and enthusiasm of everyone who got involved. Despite a challenging wind forecast hundreds of kitesurfers came to support the event. They were rewarded with wind on Saturday afternoon and the chance to create the Armada, which looked amazing as hundreds of kites filled the sky as the kitesurfers left CBK beach.’

The event has grown significantly since its launch last year, becoming a weekend festival which included live music, a big screen, local and international kite brands exhibiting gear and talks from kite pros and industry experts. Sir Richard Branson, whose company Virgin are title sponsors, sent a message of support to all the kitesurfers which was beamed onto the big screen during the after party. Sir Branson said, “As a keen kitesurfer, I am fully behind the Kitesurfing Armada, at Virgin we are trying to support Kitesurfing in a range of ways and there are big plans for the future. I am sure the Kitesurfing Armada will be a big part of these plans and it will go from strength to strength over the coming years.”

Dan Charlish said “It’s fantastic to have the support of Virgin, and many other sponsors including Volvo, Best Kiteboarding, Mystic and the local council without whom the event simply couldn’t happen. They provide support in a range of ways and enable us to cover the costs to run the festival – so we can ensure every penny raised on the water goes to charity. This year it looks like we have raised over £45,000 for our 3 charities Virgin Unite, the RNLI and youth charity Snow-Camp – which is a great achievement from everyone concerned.

Lewis Crathern, Pro Kitesurfer, Brighton Pier Jumper and event ambassador said, “Kitesurfing needs an event like this and I am very proud to be part of it.”

Our friends at Best Kiteboarding have been a fantastic support as Headline Sponsors of VKSA 2014.  Best have been fully behind the event since its very first inception –  supporting Lewis Crathern as a Best rider as the event has developed, positively promoting the event across the kite industry and now, releasing the Best / Virgin TS Kite!

Best say: ‘The Virgin edition of the brand new Best TS is the ultimate crossover kite for everybody who needs a performance oriented kite to boost big airs, throw unhooked wakestyle tricks, slice waves or get the most out of a freeride session. The TS is the kite to do it all. The Open-C design delivers a rock solid stability while the kite geometry ensures easy handling without sacrificing flying speed. If anything, the TS is one of the fastest kites on the market, thanks to its shape, bridle system and light weight. As the TS comes with a lifetime warranty, we build it bomb proof. The new model has a Double Core RipStop reinforced trailing edge and a fine tuned placement of Dacron canopy, making it ultra durable. The Best TS is the perfect kite to break the World Record one more time.’

Sebastian Heitmann, CEO of Best Kiteboarding, said: ‘We are very proud to support the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada again and to help making it an even greater success. Our aim to make people ‘Ride with us’ couldn’t be better reflected than in this event and we cannot wait to get out there with all our friends. We are excited to break the world record one more time and to raise money and awareness for people in need. See you on the water at Hayling Island!’

Nobile Kiteboarding has become a partner of this year’s Virgin Kitesurfing Armada – a fantastic kitesurfing festival, World Record attempt and charity fundraiser held on Hayling Island, south England. During the event, which will be held in September / October 2014, 4-500 participants will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest parade of kitesurfers. Sir Richard Branson, the founder and owner of Virgin, will also take part in the parade.

Nobile has prepared 10 models of its NHP board with special graphics designed exclusively for the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada. A number of the boards will be put up for charity auction, some will be prizes at the event and participants will also have a chance to win them in competitions over the next month. It is the first common project between Nobile and the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada, but certainly not the last one!

‘We hope that together with the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada we will promote this wonderful sport of kiteboarding, and support the fantastic charities involved too. We’re leaving for England with big team and the latest Nobile Saudade collection which will stir things up in the world of kiteboarding” says Gosia Rosiak-Brawańska, Nobile CEO.

The Virgin Kitesurfing Armada are delighted to have Windguru as a key partner for the forthcoming event. As part of the partnership, Windguru are providing two bespoke wind stations giving live wind readings  at the start and finish of the downwinder, which will be a huge help to all participants and organisers. Last week the Kitesurfing Armada team set both stations up at Hayling Island and Pagham and the readings have been coming through perfectly. Everyone can now view the new stations at: http://www.windguruspot.cz/?id=33 http://www.windguruspot.cz/?id=43

Vaclav Hornik of Windguru said, ‘ Our mission is to provide all wind addicts with service that help them to catch the wind, we are trying to make the best wind forecast and now we have another tool, the Windguru Station which measures the wind on the spot and make the real conditions available online to everyone. We are delighted to be a partner of the Armada, to promote this great event on Windguru and support it with two of these stations.’

Dan Charlish from the Kitesurfing Armada said, ‘It’s going to be a massive help having these stations when it comes to making the decisions about when to actually run the event, and also for monitoring the situation during the event as the wind changes. We used Windguru data last year so having them an official partner makes perfect sense. And a big thank you to the Inn on the Beach at Hayling and Pagham Yacht Club for hosting the stations, they are the perfect locations to get accurate readings for both spots – and it was great to send Lewis up on the roof of the pub to get it all fixed up!’
